Don’t get royally caught out– check your gas fitter is
registered this jubilee weekend
30th May 2012
Ahead of the bank holiday Jubilee weekend, Gas Safe Register is
advising people on how to stay safe if their gas appliances let
them down.
Gas Safe Register receives 14% more calls following a bank
holiday weekend, which suggests more people are searching for
engineers in a desperate hunt to get their gas appliances fixed
quickly. Worryingly, however, almost one in five (17.6%) people
wouldn’t even turn to the Register to find an engineer, relying
instead on a recommendation alone as proof a fitter is
registered.
With a quarter of a million illegal gas jobs carried out every
year by cowboys who don’t have the skills or the qualifications to
do the job safely, Gas Safe Register is warning the public to avoid
getting caught out.
Paul Johnston, chief executive for Gas Safe Register,
commented:
“If your boiler or cooker breaks down over the bank
holiday weekend it’s understandable you will want to get it fixed
as quickly as possible. However, remember to stay safe and check
the fitter you’re using is registered. One in five illegal gas jobs
the Register investigates are deemed immediately dangerous and
badly fitted gas appliances can kill. To check your fitter is
registered and competent ask to see their Gas Safe Register ID
card.”
